When short on time take your photos! – The reception is like a sprint. Really, it goes too fast. There are many people to talk to. There are tons of activities planned. Everyone wants your attention, and most likely you don’t want to disappoint. It’s very difficult to divert your attention back to taking wedding photos, once you get caught up in your reception activities. It’s best to arrive at your reception hall first, before your guests arrive. That way we can take loads photos before everyone descends on you, your groom, and the rest of your bridal party. You’ll get a first-look at your beautiful dining room and anticipate the wedding festivities you’ve planned for so long. Plus, photojournalistic & creatively-posed photography in an empty reception hall is pretty posh!

Save the hangover – I don’t know if you’ve seen any summer blockbusters, but one of the funniest films of the season is THE HANGOVER! It’s about three friends who lose the groom before his wedding day due to a ‘hangover.’ They spend the entire film retracing their steps until they find their buddy. Grooms, it’s your wedding day too. The best thing you can do for your bride is to be at the alter, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, clear and refreshed. The camera doesn’t lie and can easily spot redness in the eyes, flushed skin tones, and lethargy. Sure. Go have a great time with your friends, but get enough rest after your bachelor party, so you don’t look eternally hung-over in your wedding day photographs.

It was a windy, wonderful day for Lola & Randall! We had fun at the Bourne Mansion in Long Island, watching Lola’s veil dance in the wind…with a mind of its own…almost forming a Nigerian gele right before our eyes. More coming soon. Here’s a first look -

Shoot your bachelor/bachelorette party – It seems like a daring thing to do. Potentially embarrassing gifts may pop out of gift wrapping and tissue paper. Girl friends and guy friends may be inebriated, loud and bawdy right before your wedding day. And now there is photographic evidence of it! But so what? After moving, after marriage, after babies, life tends to shift a bit. It may be tough to assemble all your best friends in one room like that again. Rarely do you get to casually celebrate with your crew…the people you love and grew up with. Shooting your bachelor parties may create some of the greatest memories of your youth…the way you used to be before life took you in different directions.

Keep a few wedding reception traditions – I’ve noticed many post-millennial brides tend to forego the wedding reception traditions of yesteryear – the bouquet toss, cake cutting, removing the garter, rice throwing, etc. But, hold on…this is my appeal to you. Do them anyway. Why? Photographically, they round out the timeline of your reception well. I know these photographs may seem corny today, but looking back on your wedding day 10 or 20 or 30 years from now, these traditions will add a certain charm to your wedding album…even if you are somewhat embarrassed, apprehensive, or awkward. Your natural expression is part of the fun! Plus, your kids will enjoy your photographs much more than you will. So don’t be afraid to dive in and embrace all the cheesiness of it!
